What appeals to you about electronics?
I enjoy the combination of creativity and technical problem-solving, where I can design ideas, develop solutions, and see them come to life through hardware and systems. This blend of innovation and engineering is what makes electronics such an exciting and rewarding field for me.
Why did you want a scholarship with Waters?
I was interested in a scholarship with Waters because of the company’s specialism in scientific instruments that support pioneering research, especially within the medical and life sciences sectors. I was drawn to the purpose behind Waters’ work and the real-world impact it has on improving scientific understanding and advancing healthcare. The opportunity to contribute to technology that enables important research made Waters an especially appealing company to work with and learn from.
What type of work have you been involved with during your placement?
During my summer placements, I worked on the design and development of a regulated 15kV power supply unit for use in Waters’ quadrupole mass spectrometers. The project involved working with multiple electronics disciplines, ranging from mixed-signal electronics and power electronics to digital systems and FPGA design. Working on this project from initial design to bench testing and validation allowed me to use the knowledge from my university studies in a real-life application, as well as gain an appreciation of the differences between a theoretical design and a physical assembly, and how that affects electronic systems in a solution with stringent requirements. The support from the electronics team during my time at Waters made my experience so much more enriching and enjoyable.
What are your hobbies and interests?
Outside of electronics, my interests lie in the performing arts. I work as a guitarist in pit bands for musical theatre productions, and I regularly perform with the university’s Concert Band as an alto saxophonist. I am also part of the University of York’s softball team, who frequently compete with other university softball teams across the UK.

CSA Catapult
"Learning industry-standard RF & Microwave EDA tools, developing both technical skills and soft skills, access to cutting-edge laboratory equipment and being able to learn from the wealth of extremely talented engineers at CSA Catapult has been a great benefit to me both professionally and personally."
Tara
Arm
"I've been learning more about chip design, the flow of SoC development and how different blocks fit together. I've also started building my verification skills, from writing tests and analysing waveforms to understanding issues in more detail and working out how to solve them."
Grace
Viper Innovations
"Working closely with my line manager, I had helped to create an initial framework for an improvement to one of Viper’s products, using Azure IoT Edge, Python, Raspberry Pi HATs (Hardware Attached on Top) and communication methods"
