Who we are and what we do
Fractile was founded in 2022 on the bet that, eventually, the world’s most capable AI systems would be limited in their impact by the amount of time they take to produce useful outputs. We bet everything on the logical conclusion: that the only way to truly unlock this latent value, to make speed viable at scale, was to radically re-invent the hardware that we run our frontier AI models on. Ever since, we have been building chips and systems that tackle this problem: how to generate output at thousands of tokens per second, while handling the complexity and capacity challenges of operating large models at very long contexts.
The workloads that push to the limits of the current frontier are already transformational; it is the technical and economic limits on inference speed that are constraining progress. The defining work of the 21st century will be marked by the engine of inference delivering immense and diffuse chains of intellectual inquiry, in drug discovery, in software engineering, in materials discovery, in any field where humanity will benefit from sheer intellectual work to resolve complex problems.
What you could be doing during your work placement
Placements will be offered in the following teams:
Software Team, based in the Bristol or London office
Our software supports the development of our hardware, and provides the full stack of tools to unlock its full potential.
During a placement in the software team you could:
- Work on the compiler that translates AI models into high-performance code for Fractile hardware.
- Build performance models of Fractile silicon that guide the development of both our hardware and our software.
- Write the low-level software that brings Fractile chips and their supporting systems to life.
Frontend Team, based in the Bristol or London office
The frontend silicon team turns our novel architecture into the logical design description of our chip. They design and verify the compute, memory and interconnecting logic that can transform trillions of numbers a second.
During a placement in the Frontend team you could:
- Write RTL for a real block of Fractile’s next-generation inference silicon.
- Build a verification environment that hunts for bugs before they reach silicon.
Physical Design Team, based in the Bristol or London office
The Physical Design team turns the logical design description into a silicon layout. They transform AND/OR specifications into the transistor structures and wiring that get manufactured while hitting power, performance and cost targets on a process where no two transistors are quite the same.
During a placement in the Physical Design team you could:
- Take a real logical design through to layout of Fractile’s own AI inference Silicon using the same industry-leading tools our engineers do.
- Analyse the results to improve both the chip and the way we build it.
Our work involves technologies subject to UK, US and other international export control regulations. Certain roles may require additional eligibility checks to ensure compliance with applicable law. We’ll be transparent about this throughout the hiring process.
