Who we are and what we do
KIOXIA invented the world’s first NAND flash memory in 1987 and continues to be a world leader in NAND flash and SSD (Solid State Drive) technology. Located on Milton Park, a high-tech business park near historic Oxford, KIOXIA Technology UK Ltd designs very high-performance VLSI controllers for KIOXIA branded SSDs. Our SoCs (System on a Chip) are designed to work with the very latest BiCS 3D NAND Flash technology developed by KIOXIA, Japan. We have around 80 people, including RTL, Verification, System, Embedded Firmware and Software Engineers and we work very closely with KIOXIA offices worldwide.
KIOXIA (formerly Toshiba Memory) is a leading provider of high-performance client, data centre and enterprise solid-state storage products that enables customers to tackle storage challenges head on while delivering intelligent and optimized approaches to how data is captured, stored, accessed, analysed and leveraged in today’s data-driven era.
UK Office History: Who we are
While KIOXIA Technology UK Ltd has been part of the KIOXIA group since 2014, the history of the team goes back much further than this.
Established in 1992, we were acquired by Toshiba in January 2014, bringing the supply of NAND FLASH chips in-house. Toshiba then span out its memory group which became KIOXIA in 2018. Our team’s focus has now shifted from consumer to Datacentre and Enterprise and is a valued part of KIOXIA’s engineering expertise.
Throughout this period, the team in the UK has continued to thrive, and while it is now part of a much larger company, it continues to have the agile start-up mentality that drove its inception. Many of the employees have been with the company since our early days of Oxford Semiconductor and PLX, and we pride ourselves on keeping the culture that made it so attractive to join.
UK Office Technology: What we do
The team at KIOXIA Technology UK’s office on Milton Park have a successful record in developing ASIC designs, algorithms and firmware for KIOXIA’s leading-edge Solid-State Disk controllers targeted at Enterprise and Data Centre markets.
The team are developing designs for 5nm/12nm processes, supporting the bandwidths and requirements of the latest PCIe interfaces, protocols and KIOXIA’s NAND Flash.
The site’s core developments leverage over a decade of experience developing SSD designs and a proven methodology coupling RTL design with high-speed micro code engines for flexibility to handle new requirements whilst minimising the chance of a re-spin. The development flow couples standard UVM simulation environments and custom FPGA platforms with multi-FPGA boards to allow the designs to be tested in real world servers prior to tape out.
The ASIC team participates in all stages of the development flow, from customer/standards requirements capture, architecture, development, testing and post tape out support. This allows members to have exposure to multiple stages of the project, providing flexibility and excellent opportunities to those wanting to learn and expand their knowledge/skills, as well as those looking to focus their career in specific areas such as UVM verification
What you could be doing during your work placement
We are looking for an engineer to join our ASIC/SoC team in the development of SSD controllers. The successful candidate will be working with experts in different aspects of SSD Controller development on state of the art projects. You will be given the opportunity to undertake role specific training to further develop your knowledge, experience and further your career development.
Based at our KIOXIA Technology UK site in Milton Park, Oxfordshire, engineers undertake design and verification activities. In this role, you will work closely with other team members, as well as with cross functional teams including architecture, firmware and validation. You will get a chance to utilize and advance your design, verification and architecture or Firmware skills while developing SSD controller ASICs.
The KIOXIA UK team has a wide range of industry experience from 30 years to recent graduates. You will be part of an industry leading SoC development team undertaking complex design challenges involving high-speed interfaces, high-performance accelerators & multi-CPU designs. Team responsibilities include SoC architecture, design, verification, synthesis, FPGA prototyping & validation.
Examples of previous projects:
- Developed Machine readable data for ML & AI to leverage for better debug automation.
- Researched and select better memory management systems for Data Plane qualification
- Developed and deployed Verilog modules for FPGA validation purposes
Future projects may include:
- Develop and deploy Formal -Proof Verification on Verilog Modules
- Setup and deploy C++ Simulator for IP integration into SoC platforms.
- UVM Verification development & deployment of UVM baseclass features to future proof codebase
