Scholarship Buddies are appointed to support UKESF Scholars as they commence their scholarships and undertake their first work placements. It is an informal agreement that should benefit both the Buddy and the new Scholar.
"The buddy scheme helped me feel comfortable asking questions about everything UKESF and work related."

Scholarship Buddies
As part of the UKESF Scholarship Scheme, new scholars are matched with a Scholarship Buddy. Buddies are current or former UKESF Scholars who volunteer their time to support those at an earlier stage of their journey.
The Buddy Scheme provides informal peer support from someone who understands the academic, placement and early career experience of being a UKESF Scholar.
Buddies may:
-
Share their experience and insights
-
Offer encouragement and reassurance
-
Provide perspective on placements and professional development
-
Act as a sounding board as new scholars build confidence
The scheme complements workplace mentoring and employer support. It is not a formal careers advisory or recruitment service.
How It Works
UKESF introduces buddies and scholars by email. Participants then agree how and when to connect, whether by video call, phone, email or in person.
The relationship usually runs until the end of the academic year, after which both parties may decide whether to continue informally.
Participation is voluntary for both buddies and scholars.
Professional Approach
Professional Approach
The Buddy Scheme operates as a professional peer-support initiative. Participants are expected to:
-
Engage respectfully and professionally
-
Maintain appropriate personal and professional boundaries
-
Keep the relationship focused on peer support and development
-
Avoid placing pressure in relation to employment opportunities
-
Refrain from behaviour that could be perceived as harassment, discrimination or coercion
Conversations may include personal experiences and reflections. Information shared should be treated with discretion and respect.
Although the scheme is informal, UKESF is available to provide guidance if needed. If a participant has concerns about their buddy relationship, they are encouraged to contact: [email protected]
Our aim is to ensure the Buddy Scheme remains a positive and rewarding experience for all involved.
