Why I chose to study Electronics
Electronics makes up the fabric of modern life. Everywhere we go and everything we do has electronics involved in it in some form or another. For me, this is what I find exciting. Being able to be involved with designing and making devices that affect the every day and to be able to make a positive contribution to the world and people’s lives is what motivates me to be a part of the Electronics industry.
Why I wanted to work at Plextek
I applied to Plextek as they are an electronics design consultancy. This meant that there would be a lot of scope for me to be involved in a lot of different projects. As I was only a year into my degree when I applied, I wasn’t completely sure on where I may want to specialise so choosing Plextek was a no brainer in being able to keep my options open.
My experience at Plextek
During my placement, I have been involved in developing a DSP for use with a millimetre wave RADAR. For this, I designed and manufactured an ADC card to send samples into an FPGA where the signal processing took place and then sent the processed data to an ARM 9 processor for user visualisation. This project taught me a lot about signal processing and analogue and digital design. It was also a valuable experience into project management.
In my free time, I enjoy travelling around Europe and the UK and taking photographs with my SLR. I also enjoy playing the piano and the trumpet, and am also making my own custom electric guitar.
