UKESF supports Southampton’s Electronics and Computer Science Taster Course
The UKESF has supported a successful networking event as part of the University of Southampton’s Electronics and Computer Science Taster Course, with 139 STEM-focused A-level students in attendance (20% of whom were female).
Southampton’s residential Taster Course took place from 25th to 29th July 2016 and gave students the opportunity to apply their skills, work in groups, and investigate and design solutions to real problems in undergraduate labs. Students stayed in university halls and enjoyed a busy technical programme, as well as finding out about career options and taking part in social activities.
The UKESF-supported networking event took the form of an evening BBQ with eight different company stands providing information about careers in Electronics to the students. Several enthusiastic UKESF scholars manned the UKESF stand, and four other stands were taken by UKESF sponsor companies: Cadence, Cambridge Consultants, Meggitt and Swindon Silicon Systems.
Dr Geoff Merrett, Associate Professor at Southampton and Taster Course leader, said “The networking event started at 7pm, and I had every expectation that conversations would have died-down after an hour or two. However, after three hours had passed, we had to ask the students to leave as staff needed to go home! The stands were two or three students deep for much of this time, and companies commented on the excellent and insightful questions that they were asking.”
The University of Southampton’s Electronics and Computer Science Taster Course will run again next year (provisional dates: 10th to 14th July 2017). For more information, click here.
