National Women in Engineering Day 2016
The UKESF celebrated National Women in Engineering Day (NWED) 2016 by taking part in a day of STEM outreach at the University of Salford, Manchester, on Thursday 23rd June. CEO Stew Edmondson facilitated a People Like Me session for girls from local secondary schools and later participated in a panel discussion about industry responsibility.
The People Like Me session marked the official launch of the UKESF’s Electronics sector-specific version of the resource pack and was delivered to 45 Y8 girls from the Greater Manchester area, with support from their teachers. Stew said, “The girls all enjoyed doing the quiz and were generally in agreement that the outcome reflected themselves – and were also quite taken that there were roles in STEM careers for people like them!” The teachers were each given a People Like Me pack to take back to their schools, where they can deliver the quiz with further groups of girls.
In the evening Stew participated in a panel discussion, ‘What responsibility does industry have to encourage and support women in engineering?’, with Prof Haifa Takruri-Rizk and Helen Wollaston, Chief Executive of the WISE Campaign, among others.
