Who we are and what we do

vivaMOS specialises in the development and fabrication of high-end large-area CMOS image sensors. The company was setup in 2014 as a spin-out from STFC (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory) with the aim of commercialising the highly sought-after Lassena image sensor. The leading edge Lassena wafer-scale CMOS sensor offers a unique combination of high-speed, high-resolution, and low-noise performance, as well as being buttable on 3 sides, enabling the introduction of large Flat Panel Detectors for a wide range of X-ray applications.

What you could be doing during your work placement

You will be gaining work experience in semiconductor design, electronics design and testing, and new product development (CMOS image sensors).

Why I chose Electronics?

I was attracted to Electronics because it is such broad subject area, used by so many people for so many different things. Electronics has the potential to change people’s lives for the better and that is what I intend to do with it. My main area of interest is in Medical Electronics and the amazing technology being developed for diagnosis and rehabilitation.

Why I chose vivaMOS

When looking for a scholarship I wanted to find a small company in which I could make a positive contribution and learn from engineers with lots of experience. vivaMOS offered all of these things, along with a great team atmosphere, the opportunity to try lots of different things and the chance to see some really exciting projects.

My experience at vivaMOS

During the placement, I worked with help from several engineers to design a PCB and some FPGA firmware. Working on this project has given me knowledge of different tools and programming languages and the chance to learn by practical experience. In addition to this, I have been able to observe the business aspect of the company and understand everyone else’s role within the team. I have really valued the advice given to me by engineers at vivaMOS on both my work and my career in engineering.

What I enjoy outside work

Music is a huge part of my life and I never go anywhere without my iPod. I love gigs and festivals, play a load of instruments and I’m a sucker for a decent sound system. At university, I play volleyball several times a week and often attend the university’s student wrestling club. I travel to Germany whenever I get the chance, but if I’m stuck in the UK, the pub is always a good choice.
