Who we are and what we do
Established in 2005, Moortec provides compelling embedded subsystem IP solutions for Process, Voltage & Temperature (PVT) monitoring, targeting advanced node CMOS technologies on 40nm, 28nm, 16nm, 12nm and 7nm. Moortec’s in-chip sensing solutions support the semiconductor design community’s demands for increased device reliability and enhanced performance optimisation. Moortec provides excellent support for IP application, integration and device test during production. Moortec’s high-performance analog and mixed-signal IP designs are delivered to ASIC and System on Chip (SoC) technologies within the datacenter, consumer, automotive and IoT sectors.
What you could be doing during your work placement
You will be part of the small team of skilled engineers developing leading edge in-chip monitors and sensors. There will be opportunities for undergraduates interested in analogue and mixed signal IC design, circuit layout and verification.
We aim to give scholars immersion into a real engineering environment working alongside experienced engineers on actual products, as well as working with the other functions in the business such as sales, marketing, IT and QA. The aim is to develop the skills which cannot be learnt in the lecture theatre and support the scholar in becoming a well-rounded engineer.

What appeals to you about Electronics?
I’ve spent my entire life trying to be free. Free to think, to express myself, to be myself. It didn’t take long to realize that in the world we live in, true freedom can only be experienced within one’s mind; I can imagine the freedoms I want and imagine myself enjoying them, but reality remains unchanged. Therefore, I started studying the world around me. In order to consciously change something one must first understand it; I delved into Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. I enriched my arsenal of knowledge and set out to change the world – through Engineering.
There are many forms of Engineering, but none as mysterious and magical as Electronic Engineering. From displays to telephones to computers, the possibilities are endless. I felt free for the first time in a while. I was equipped with the power to imagine something, design it, create it and change the world forever.
Why did you want a scholarship with Moortec?
As I progressed with my studies I came across the UKESF Scholarship Scheme. I painstakingly researched every company prior to choosing Moortec Semiconductor Ltd. Moortec jumped off the page in my eyes. They are a hardware design company, imagining and designing, changing the world. Their product is necessary yet unconventional; it showed me they think differently, just like me. It was a small company on the outset of expanding, meaning I got to talk to everyone, take on actual work and my efforts didn’t go unnoticed – just as I’d hoped.
What type of work have you been involved with during your placement?
In my placement I was challenged with difficult tasks and real world consequences. I was regularly given the opportunity to stray out of my comfort zone, and thanks to this I no longer doubt what I can do; if I want to do it and it can be done, I will do it, I tell myself.
What are your interests outside of work?
I enjoy playing basketball, watching movies, reading books and hanging out with friends. I often go on long walks and occasionally enjoy writing literature.

Why I chose my degree
From an early age, I always had interest in disassembling things and understanding how they worked. Electronic devices were those of biggest interest to me. I came to realise that you won’t make a living by pulling things apart and you need to put them back together at some point or even better build something new and useful. This lead me into graduating with a degree in electronics and electrical engineering. I started my career with Synopsys, designing high speed I/O systems.
Why I chose Moortec
I joined Moortec about one year ago. I was mainly interested in Moortec as it was a small yet fast growing company working on innovative products in the most state of the art technologies available such as 16nm and 7nm for a very wide range of customers across the globe. I have gained lot of new experience in a variety of areas. Problem solving and learning is part of the everyday design process.
My experience at Moortec
My role as a Moortec engineer is working as part of the Analog design team developing and supporting high precision smart temperature sensors, voltage monitors, and process detectors. This involves the complete cycle of design, from specification to final product as well as silicon test chip data processing and customer support.
